During February 1992, a series of relatively warm storms passed eastward across southern California, yielding intense precipitation that triggered widespread mass movement, flooding, property damage, and loss of life. These storms were triggered by an intense low pressure system (976 mb) off northern California which deepened as its eastward progress was initially blocked by a high pressure ridge (1040 mb) across western North America. Between February 10 and 13, large areas of Ventura and Los Angeles counties experienced cumulative precipitation of 200–400 mm with intensities reaching 40–50 mm hr-1. Mass movement, mainly as soil slips that transformed downslope into debris flows, occurred where cumulative precipitation exceeded 300 mm and when sustained intensities exceeded 25 mm hr-1. Stream response was rapid, particularly in urban areas where impermeable surfaces and storm drains fed concrete stream channels. The canalized upper Los Angeles River and Arroyo Simi exceeded all previous discharges for over 43 and 36 years of record, respectively. Other streams, from the large Santa Clara River to modest Malibu Creek, yielded recurrence intervals for the peak discharge of between 8 and 24 years, but the rapidity of flooding everywhere was remarkable. Whereas main trunk streams, canalized or not, responded predictably, the storm series emphasized the problems of poorly controlled development of potentially unstable hillsides and floodable lowlands and indicated a need to reassess the assumptions upon which such development is permitted. Helium‐3 is a stable cosmogenic isotope that can be used to determine the time interval during which a rock sample has been at or close to the Earth’s surface. As a result of the high production rate of ‘cosmogenic’3He (≈ 130 at g?1 year?1) and the low detection limit of modern mass spectrometers, it is possible to date exceptionally young surfaces (≈ 1000 years). The precision and accuracy of cosmogenic 3He measurements depend critically on the passive helium blank (produced by the metalwork of the extraction furnace) which can be significant relative to the sample signals. We have developed and constructed, at the CRPG (Nancy, France), a new high temperature furnace (< 1500 °C) to extract helium in minerals such as apatite, pyroxene and olivine at 1050, 1350 and 1450 °C, respectively. The furnace demonstrated an excellent helium extraction yield (> 99% for olivine and pyroxene for heating times of 20–30 min and temperatures in the range 1050–1450 °C) and low residual helium contributions (the blank, obtained under the same analytical conditions as for sample extraction: 1 × 10?15 mole 4He and < 4 × 10?21 mole 3He). Dissolution cavities in weathered pebbly quartzite of the ~2.5-Ga Moeda Formation at Capanema, Quadrilátero Ferrífero of Minas Gerais, Brazil, are decorated with suspended filaments of opaline silica. The filaments sustain xenotime–hematite aggregates in the open space. Xenotime occurs as inclusions in buds and botryoidal aggregates of hematite. The filamentous structures consist of strand-forming buds, hypha-like extensions, and thin strands that compose mat-like arrangements. They resemble microbial filaments that were replaced by opaline silica and fossilized. The occurrence of spherical hematite as protuberances on hematite-free opaline hyphae is interpreted as accretion of dissolved iron onto extracellular polymers. Phosphate sites in polymeric substances expelled from the microbial filaments might have adsorbed yttrium and heavy rare-earth elements from groundwater to the iron-accreting polymers. These would have resulted in botryoidal aggregates of hematite with xenotime inclusions. The presence of authigenic xenotime in the weathering zone opens a new possibility to constrain the evolution of lateritic profiles by xenotime geochronology.  相似文献

Abundant and unique opaline and Al–Si phytoliths and opaline bioliths have been discovered in Holocene peat deposits of tropical Tasek Bera in Peninsular Malaysia. These are secreted mainly by plants (higher plants and algae) and incorporated in the sediment cycle during the rapid biomass turnover. Many wetland plants have entire skeletons secreted. The study shows that differing plant parts of same species as well as same parts of differing plant species incorporate different amounts of elements. Whilst deciduous trees of the swamp forest have phytoliths enriched in Al, most phytoliths of palms, sedges and grasses of the littoral swamp are composed of opaline silica. Incorporation of Al and many other elements into relatively stable phytoliths is the result of high evapotranspiration rate and ample plant-available elements and can serve to detoxify the soil solution. Because of the abundance of such opaline and Al–Si structures, spongillid and algal remains in acid peat-accumulating environments, tropical peatlands represent repositories of Si and Al, which together with variable amounts of other elements could provide the prime material for silicate neoformation during later diagenetic processes. Neoformation of minerals from bioliths would explain the scarcity of biogenic remains in Carboniferous and Tertiary coal deposits. Furthermore, incorporation of major elements in phytoliths may limit the rate of leaching of these elements in an environment where biomass turnover is rapid, thus reducing the loss of nutrients and other plant-essential elements. Most nutrients of tropical peats are recycled by plants within the top 150 cm and an upward migration of plant-essential elements, such as Mg, Ca, or P, but also of Si and Al, occurs during peat accumulation. Such elemental cycling strongly influences the geochemical composition of the peats during mire evolution. Utilizing Al for normalization of major and minor elements of tropical peats for paleoclimatic and paleodepositional analyses may thus result in incorrect interpretations.  相似文献

Mercury contents in Precambrian banded iron formation-hosted hematite ores are virtually unknown. In an attempt to provide information on the abundance and distribution of Hg in Fe ore, we present analyses for Hg in samples of high-grade soft hematite ore from Gongo Soco, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Bulk samples contain from <  5 to 25  ppb Hg without obvious correlation with major elements. Granulometric fractions of follow-up samples have amounts of Hg from 6 to 48  ppb and display positive linear correlations with total Mn as MnO (r = 0.87), LOI (r = 0.87) and SiO2 (r = 0.76), as well as a negative linear correlation with total Fe as Fe2O3 (r = −  0.87). The correlations suggest that Hg is associated with a hydrated ferruginous groundmass bearing residual Mn, Al and Si, which replaced gangue minerals in itabirite in the process of formation of the Gongo Soco soft hematite ore.  相似文献

Environmental geologists have been concerned with deleterious side effects of ground-water development such as enroachment of saline water and subsidence of the land surface. New uses of the subsurface environment, including fresh-water storage in saline aquifers, permanent containment of noxious wastes, and energy storage in the form of superheated water, should be considered. There are many potentially favorable and unfavorable environmental impacts of such uses. New and important research targets are field studies of transport phenomena, osmotic effects of clays, water softening by injecting and later withdrawing water from aquifers. The natural interrelationship of the practice of environmental enhancement and man's nature as a territorial proprietor is preferable to bureaucratic actions for the same purpose.  相似文献

The Neoproterozoic Gondwana supercontinent cycle includes the break-up of a Mesoproterozoic supercontinent here termed Pangea Y, followed by the fusion of several cratons and the large East Gondwana continent to form Gondwanaland. The accretion can be analysed in terms of plate tectonics. Rifting of Pangea Y was active in the 1100-650 Ma interval. Collision and deformation events occurred in the 820-540 Ma interval. The earliest collision event at 820 Ma between the Sao Francisco-Congo craton and East gondwana formed the Zambezi belt. Major shear zones in transpressional mobile belts developed from 820 to 550 Ma. Post orogenic magmatism and extension events affected the Gondwana supercontinent in the 660-500 Ma interval.  相似文献

We examine the representation of the mean state and interannual variability of Antarctic sea ice in six simulations of the twentieth century from coupled models participating in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change fourth assessment report. The simulations exhibit a largely seasonal southern hemisphere ice cover, as observed. There is a considerable scatter in the monthly simulated climatological ice extent among different models, but no consistent bias when compared to observations. The scatter in maximum winter ice extent among different models is correlated to the strength of the climatological zonal winds suggesting that wind forced ice transport is responsible for much of this scatter. Observations show that the leading mode of southern hemisphere ice variability exhibits a dipole structure with anomalies of one sign in the Atlantic sector associated with anomalies of the opposite sign in the Pacific sector. The observed ice anomalies also exhibit eastward propagation with the Antarctic circumpolar current, as part of the documented Antarctic circumpolar wave phenomenon. Many of the models do simulate dipole-like behavior in sea ice anomalies as the leading mode of ice variability, but there is a large discrepancy in the eastward propagation of these anomalies among the different models. Consistent with observations, the simulated Antarctic dipole-like variations in the ice cover are led by sea-level pressure anomalies in the Amundsen/ Bellingshausen Sea. These are associated, to different degrees in different models, with both the southern annular mode and the El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). There are indications that the magnitude of the influence of ENSO on the southern hemisphere ice cover is related to the strength of ENSO events simulated by the different models.  相似文献
